International Translation Day 2015 brings translators and interpreters to the Turku Book Fair

The 2015 International Translation Day will be organised in Finland as part of the Turku International Book Fair events. The International Translation Day seminar will take place in the Banqueting Hall of Turku Fair and Congress Centre on Friday, 2nd October, from 10 am to 4 pm. The 2015 theme is the Changing Face of Translation and Interpreting. Well over a hundred people have signed up in advance for the event.

The International Translation Day seminar will feature cartoon translation, translator/editor co-operation, subtitling the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle’s Oscars Gala broadcast, as well as the revised instructions for producing legally valid translations, and much more.

All fair visitors interested in translation are invited to listen to the International Translation Day presentations. The seminar is intended for professionals, students and anyone interested in the translation industry.

‘The work of translators and interpreters requires professional expertise, which will never be transferred from human to machine, regardless of developments in automation and robotisation in society. If anything, in a global world tinted with interdependencies, demand for translators and interpreters will become even stronger. That is why it is really wonderful to host the International Translation Day once again as part of the Turku International Book Fair. Translation is also a major theme of our fair in broader terms and it is visible in many topics relating to Sámiland, among others,’ says Mrs. Jenni Haukio, First Lady of Finland and Programme Manager of the Turku International Book Fair.

International Translation Day programme

The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters is a member of the International Federation of Translators, FIT (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs). FIT represents about 80,000 translators and interpreters from 55 countries, which celebrate International Translation Day every year on around 30th September. In Finland, professional associations put together a national event every year, offering both professionals and the general public a programme focusing on translation and interpreting. The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL) organises the event in co-operation with the Association of Finnish Translation Companies (SKTOL) and Translation Industry Professionals (KAJ).
